The first Sarah Waters I ever read was The Little Stranger and what a gorgeous book it is. The twisted story, the complicated characters, the larger than life Hundreds Hall, everything about it haunted me for days once I finished the book. It possesses a quality not many contemporary novels come with these days — of being unforgettable.
Today was a rainy kind of day in Lahore. And rainy days in December are the best kind of days. The heater is out now. Warm clothes are not going back in for a while. It’s almost like a little carnival we’ve been blessed with before the inevitable onset of the very depressing (and never ending) summer days.
There was a time when I wasn’t too comfortable with the idea of book photography. In fact I never understood the need to put up aesthetic photos of books together with candles, cats, tea and what not for the picture to look just perfect..
Whenever I buy a new book I write my name on it, along with the date I bring it home. I’ve been doing this for as long as I can remember now. It is a rather strange habit to be honest but strangely comforting too. Almost like marking the beginning of an endearing lifelong relationship.
Reading the first part of this two part novel - Storm in June - and it’s enthralling to say the least. Originally planned as a five part book, the first part of Suite Française explores the predicament of people fleeing from Paris on the eve of the Nazi invasion. Such a gorgeous, deeply moving piece of literature.
These are some of the books I began reading this year but sadly never got around to finishing (in addition to some on my kindle 😱)
